I think it should be possible to use the sidechain without surround panners, if you create child busses for the surround group (you can call the busses "signal input" and "sidechain input" if you like).  At least that's how it looks like in the SX3 manual. (I can't tell for sure, because I only have SX 1)

All this will only work on the master buss if you are using Child Busses.

It may work better in a group channel, but really until implementation of VST3, which will allow sidechains, we are stuck with workarounds at best, and will not be able to use any form of ducking either.

So you haven't tried it with group channels in SX3?  If it works like I think it should work, then it's not that bad a workaround.

I'll be trying it in the next couple of days.

Will post back & let you all know.

But sidechaining a single track would be neat too.  Oh well.

A group is better than nothing.

It worked perfectly, the way you described.  Thanks a lot!

Right now im listening to a simple pattern to see if it works, with four on the floor and 16 hihats.. and yes, the bassdrum is unaffected and the hihats folows the bd.  Great!

I would just like to ad something, so it will be easier for them wanting to try.

When you set the controlsignal to back+middle, it goes silent.  Dont worry, use a send to a new group or master out.  I got a little confused and maybe others will, but this way it works great.

Thanks again

And biggest thanks possible to Aleksey!!!

Sorry that I started a new topic (should have read this before).

It really works, but in High-Quality mode I get crackling sound in Crunchessor.  Normal mode is OK.  This appears only in side-chaining mode.  Can you confirm ?

Peter, please check out the latest beta version.  It fixes the high quality & sidechain problem.

Yes, the latest beta 1.5b fixes the high quality & sidechain problem.  Thanks

I have no shame to admit that I do not understand why a side chain needs 4 inputs.

If someone was nice enough to walk me through the basics of side chaining or point me to a link that explains it (and the need for 4 inputs) I would really appreciate it!

I'm just a musician, looking to raise my IQ with a little help from my friends...

Side chain is basically another signal source which is used by compressor to derive peak information from.  So, if you are compressing a stereo track, another stereo track should be provided.  In theory it is possible to provide just one mono track for side-chain, but this is not flexible enough.
