Hi folks,

I just wanted to share a trick that uses Soniformer 2 -> Compressor (crunchessor works well) in series.  This trick makes a really agressive vocal sound out of nearly any basic vocal track.  The only requirement is that the vocals were recorded in a good vocal booth/room as it will come out after compressing.

Here's how:

Set Soniformer 2 compressor mode to 'inverted', then attack and release to as fast as it can go (all settings same over all frequencies), keep threshold all the way up at 0dB then finally add the ratio to 1:2 (expansion).  After this add a compressor that has a ratio of something like 1:4 or even more (on the sonalksis compressor I've been using 1:7 ratio, hard knee) and compress the hell out of the vocal at about -8dB gain reduction.

If you have crunchessor set it up like this:

Clean, Snappy, attack 10ms, release 40ms (this depends a bit on vocal, these settings are for moderately fast rap vocals).  Then turn the drive knob until you get about 3 to 5 dB gain reduction.

Experimenting is the key but the basic idea of this chain is that the inverted expander (or low level expander) drives the compressor and creates a really solid vocal that is severely squashed.  This makes it sit in a very busy mix.  As a bonus by tweaking the attack setting on the compressor that follows Soniformer 2, you can get some pretty SSLesque compression artefacts.

Cheers!
