Hello

Quite recently I purchased Curve EQ and Elephant and I am very happy with them.  However, I recently found a compatability problem with Native's Kontakt sampler and Curve EQ.  Here's my stuff: AMD 2100+, 1meg+ memory, Win XP sp1, Cubase SX 2.01, TC Powercore, Motu MTP AV, Echo Mia, Kontakt 1.5.  Everything with latest drivers, no crashes, a stable system.

Here's the problem: If a Curve EQ is assigned as an insert eq in SX's mixer to process one of Kontakt's individual stereo outputs then THAT Kontakt "instance" starts behaving badly.  It is impossible to record anything because there will be maybe half a second delay (latency?) after playing a note.  So after inserting Curve EQ to process one of the instruments all the other instruments in that Kontakt instance are unplayable.  Also, when that instance of Kontakt is receiving midi from the SX's midi tracks some notes here and there are missed/delayed.  This is also strange: even though a SX midi track is sending only one note to Kontakt, Kontakt's "note count" may show 2-3 three notes received!  Note that other instances of Kontakt are not affected, only the one that has curve eq in one of it's outputs inserted.  I haven't had the time to thoroughly test this behaviour, this is what I have found so far.  I have used Voxengo's free EQ plug as a Kontakt insert and it works without any problems, but naturally I would like to use my purchase, it works so well as an audio channel insert and as a master insert!  Any thoughts?

I believe this problem cannot be solved from my side.  CurveEQ has a very large latency (ten times more than the free EssEQ) and this makes anything you run in your sequencer to become non-realtime.  Also I've heard in some cases SX does not properly process plug-ins with latency.  BTW, you may also try the latest beta 2.0a of CurveEQ (I've fixed some multitrack-related issue there), but I really think this is not the problem of CurveEQ solely.

To confirm my position you can also try free reverb SIR plug-in which has got a huge latency, too.  However, if it works seamlessly, I will start finding the fix right away.

So, for now, please install CurveEQ v2.0a beta and then try SIR (can be found on http://home.t-online.de/home/520073787260-0001/plugins_en.html).

I tested SX/Kontakt with SIR and yes, exactly the same problem!  So would you say that this is a Cubase SX or a Kontakt issue?  I will test the CurveEQ beta as you suggested, I'll let you know.  BTW do you think that this has something to do with the fact that Cubase SX has a setting in the VST plugs info window, allowing the user to set individual plugs as "old/new host behaviour"?  I set CurveEQ and Elephant to "old host behaviour" after I got some feedback kind of noises while using CurveEQ, after which the noises disappeared.

Thanks!

Newer version of CurveEQ should fix that 'old host behaviour' issue I think.

Which SX version do you use, BTW?  Do you have any other instrument you can test to compare with Kontakt?  I cannot be sure where the problem originates from.  I really think this is the host issue.

The only VST instruments I own are Kontakt 1.51 and those that come with Cubase SX.  I will test more with what I have when I have time (rather busy now) and I'll get back to you.  I do understand that this is not a bug in CurveEQ so I appreciate your support.

Aleksey, I'm back with a solution.  Just found this thread:

Should apply also to CurveEQ.  Merry Xmas!

OK, can you quickly outline what you will do to overcome this issue?  I may include this info into CurveEQ troubleshooting list.

Strange thigs happen in DAW-land...  First I tested according to the thread; I inserted another plug in series.  This did not work for me, I still got delayed notes with Kontakt.  Then I installed the CurveEQ 2.0 beta version like you suggested.  I loaded several songs I had mixed recently with CurveEQ 1.9 as SX master insert without any problems whatsoever.  Now, with 2.0 there were songs which I could not play at all due to feedback-type noises.  Checking/unchecking "old host behaviour" in VST-plugs window didn't make any difference.  CurveEQ2.0 beta didn't seem to like Digitalfishphones' Blockfish compressor, and also some TC Powercore plugs together with the Beta2.0 made SX's output feedback.  These feedbacking songs had numerous Kontakt modules and also lots of other FX plugs, and when I tried to create the same feedback-problem from scratch with just a few plugs and instruments I did not succeed.  So I cannot precisely tell you which combination of plugs created the feedback-problem.  I only know that in a song with lots of stuff, disabling Blockfish stopped the noises (but I could still see some "ripples" in the master insert's CurveEQ, which disappeared usually after disabling some TC-plugs).  I re-checked the same songs again after I uninstalled 2.0 and returned to version 1.9 and they played normally.  But still more to come: the problem with the delayed/missed Kontakt notes was GONE after re-installing 1.9...  So all is well as far as I am concerned.  But the fact that 2.0 beta feedbacked in my system remains a mystery to me.  And sorry, I didn't test the delayed/missed notes -problem with 2.0 beta as I didn't get it working properly in the first place.  Hopefully you get everything sorted out in the official 2.0 release.

Thanks for the info!  Could you check the latest v2.0b that is available now for download?  I've made several processing rearrangements and I think it must work seamlessly now, at least without those feedback noises.

V2.0b works ok.  No feedback noises, no missed notes in Kontakt.  Thanks!  Btw, what will the new/improved features of the final 2.0 be compared to the latest official 1.9 release?
