A bit off topic:
on the system I use we had an impossible phenomenon back in 1995 - at the moment it went from 4track (red/yellow/green/blue) to 8track (four less bright colors were added).
The strange thing was the noise specs (and birdies during scrubbing) were WORSE on the less brightly colored tracks ! Using the same outputs !!!
The coding was of course identical, and mixing happened on DSP, not CPU.
They came and measured at our studio, the measurements confirmed what we heard.
They never looked back. They did not even try to solve the issue, as we all agreed what was happening was just impossible.
It went away 1 year later with a new accelerator card, offering more tracks (12 in total).
The software did not change, the DSP did.
Weird stuff ...
Anyway, on my system transmodder stays inert doing as described in the OP (not Sonar)
I tried to reproduce this with SPAN (which behaved the same you said) in 3 versions of Cubase (SL3.1, C4.5 & C5.01) but no channel leaking here.
