I personally am not thoroughly interested in comparison with emulations, even if they are said to be precise.  But I guess, these curves might be useful to somebody.

Aleksey,

I agree but its the closest comparison I've had so far.  Regardless of how precise it is, the low end I was able to get on the BF was very nice due to the curve.  So now I can have this same curve in GlissEQ.  I haven't taken the time yet to see how GlissEQ fares though, better or worse.

Jessee - I'd be interested in seeing a preset that you feel matches a Bombfactory Pultec sound - did I get that right ?  I guess it's more than curve matching though.

Could you post one that hypes the bass a bit or any one you think sounds nice?  That would be fun to start - it might be cool to do a couple of preset exchanges on things that make sense...

Thanx

But AFAIK, The BF plugin is nothing like the response curves on the real deal, or the UAD-1 version either.

Have you seen the response graphs yet?

http://www.uaudio.com/webzine/july/index4.html

I also have here a set of plots that compare the BF tools with the hardware, and give several plots based on the BF presets, run through a BF version, a real unit and the UAD-1 plugin.

The differences are disturbing - from these plots there is absolutely no resemblance between the BF and the real thing whatsoever.

We are talking differences of nearly 4dB at some frequencies, the BF plots do not even resemble what they are allegedly modelled on.

So I suspect that whilst the GlissEQ curves created might well be very nice indeed, a Pultec Emulation it is not!

These I cannot find electronically, but if you wish I will scan them in and mail them to you.

Incidentally, the BF LA2A and 1176LN do not fare that much better.

The rebuttal:

http://www.bombfactory.net/news/clones.asp

For what its worth in TapeOp they did a shootout between UAD, BF, and the real hardware.  In the case of the Pultec the BF plug won our over UAD and a Summit copy of the hardware Pultec.  Anyways I'm not sure I belive UAD's claims.  As the BF link above says I belive, all their graphs show is that their emulation matches their particular unit.  Units can supposdly vary from one hardware to another.

But like I said this isn't so much as a 1:1 copy I'm looking for here but rather just mimicking what I felt was a very nice response that the BF plug had.  I used to have the UAD version and from memory is wasn't any better sounding than this BF one.

Also one last thing the graphs in your link are for 100hz and I did my tests at 30hz as that setting is the one useful for me. so I can't check to see if the curve I got matches the UAD graphs.

Jesse

After reading these interesting threads I came across a site with specification scans from the original Pultec manufacturers and also a number of others which some may find enlightening...
