What do I get when I put Out gain to -0,2 dB (reasonable safe limit, Elephant does let signal over 0 dB when the Out gain is set to 0,0 dB atleast without oversampling) and input gain to, say -2,0 dB in EL-2 mode?  The signal seems to hit the out ceiling but RMS level is decreased.  Does it do some kind of expanding?

Can I use negative input gain to decrease the perceived signal level or is there some side effects to it?

If input gain at -2 it means output RMS will be exactly 2.0 dB lower (if no limiting occuring).  If you are using DC Filter it may hit the ceiling because of the filtering.  There should be no other side effects.
