I have heard some people claim that it is more effective to apply mastering limiting in stages (for example, two passes through Elephant reducing the peaks -3 db each time) instead of passing through once reducing peaks by -6 db.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you recommend this approach? If so, do you recommend similar or different limiter settings for each instance?

I can't recommend that, because in my opinion this increases distortion. Elephant's modes already implement built-in techniques to reduce distortion.
