Please tell me how it should work: is it something fully automatic - i.e. smooth volume riding (like on the TV sets), or something else?

well, rms-power of output should be equal to rms power of input. Of, course, this may change over time. so if an automatic adaption will not work well, just display in/out diff for rms. better would be some kind of magic automatic though ;-)

I think I'll stick to displaying in/out difference in all such cases.
